71st Annual Golden Globes – The jillpasta Best Dressed List

Sunday was been a big day for TV — not only did the final episode of BBC Sherlock season three air in the UK (cue the shock blankets), but the big award season kicked off with the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards.  I don’t pay too much attention to the awards themselves because I never see all the movies, so the red carpet is the best part for me.  This has been the first red carpet in quite a long time in which there were significantly more “best dressed” than not, and I’m super excited to share my favorites with you.  When I was writing this post up, I decided that I would not be doing a “worst dressed” list for this event (or any thereafter) because I won’t be indulging in that kind of negativity.  Sorry not sorry; you’ll just have to check the tabloids for your fix.🙂

So without further ado, here’s the official jillpasta picks for Best Dressed at the 2014 Golden Globes!

Lupita Nyong'o, Kerry Washington, and Cate Blanchett at the 2014 Golden Globes

Best Dressed of the Night: Lupita Nyong’o

My jaw literally (literally!) hit the floor when I saw Lupita Nyong’o in this stunning, bright red Ralph Lauren Collection gown — she looks like she should be ruling nations.  I mean, look at how she carries that cape!  Every time she steps out on a red carpet, she is the best dressed, and the Golden Globes were no exception.  Lupita is the embodiment of style and grace, and I didn’t have to see anyone else to know that she was my best dressed of the night.  I can’t wait to see what she has in store for the rest of the awards season, and what the award season has in store for her (give Lupita ALL the awards!).

Second Place: Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington arrived at the Golden Globes looking very Olivia Pope-like in a white Balenciaga gown sporting the most surprising accessory off the night for me — a baby bump!  Maybe it’s the pregnancy glow, her natural makeup look and soft waves, or maybe both, but Kerry looked like a goddess.  I’m excited to watch Kerry set the standard for dressing a baby bump for awards season (because you know she will).

Third Place:  Cate Blanchett

The intricacy of Cate Blanchett‘s black Armani Prive dress could easily have overwhelmed its wearer, but Ms. Blanchett’s classic beauty and commanding presence kept her the star of this look.  Stand alone, this was my favorite gown of the night.

Sofia Vergara, Sandra Bullock, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, Uma Thurma, Emma Watson, and Lily Rabe at the 2014 Golden Globes

Honorable Mentions

Honestly, I don’t think many photos did Sofia Vergara‘s black Zac Posen gown justice, but that’s okay because the real star of this ensemble is her Lorraine Schwartz jewels.  *swoons*

Sandra Bullock‘s Prabal Gurung gown was one of the most unique on the GG red carpet Sunday night.  With a high-low hem, color blocking, and a pink lining (!!!!!!!), this was one of my favorite gowns of the night.

Also sporting a baby bump, Olivia Wilde looked absolutely stunning in an emerald green, long-sleeved, sparkle (sequin? crystal?) encrusted Gucci Premiere gown.  I adore this color on her.

Mila Kunis‘s part-grey chiffon, part-pewter embellished Gucci Premiere gown was business on the bottom, party up top.  I love the halter top on her, especially with the floral-inspired embellishments on the neckline.  She’s a natural beauty, so I’m glad she kept her makeup simple.

Statuesque Uma Thurman wore an amazing black embellished Versace number that was a equal parts edge and elegance, as is typical of Donatella’s creations.

Emma Watson gets most unique look of the night for me in her Dior ensemble.  From the front, it looks like a classic red short-sleeved dress, but the open back revealed that she was wearing black dress pants underneath! I think the thing I love most about this look is that she wore navy blue strappy suede heels — girlfriend was full of surprises!

Last but not least, American Horror Story beauty Lily Rabe ditched the Stevie Nicks-shawl from last week’s episode and instead wore a nude/black Georges Hobeika A-line gown with short sleeves.  I love this look for two reasons: I adore the black embellishments that seem to radiate from the neck- and waistlines and she perfectly accessorized the gown with a thin black belt to cinch her waist and a statement ring.  Simple, but effective.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons at the 2014 Golden Globes

Tiny Honorable Mention

Dressed in blush pink knee-length Tea Collection dress with an embellished neckline, black opaque tights, black patent Mary Janes, natural waves, and a toothless grin, Modern Family star Aubrey Anderson-Emmons was by far the cutest lady on the red carpet.  It’s very Zooey Deschanel, no?

Jared Leto, Orlando Bloom, Usher, Chris Pine, and Kuna Nayyar at the 2014 Golden Globes

The Men

It’s easy for the guys to blend into the background on the red carpet, because a tux is a tux is a tux unless you’re one of the five gentleman above.

Say what you want about the ponytail and the scruff, Jared Leto‘s Saint Laurent tux looks fabulous with the satin scarf.

Maybe I’m biased (full disclosure: I once had an entire bedroom wall dedicated to his face), but Orlando Bloom‘s Lanvin tux was one of my favorites of the night.  I love the midnight blue jacket with the black lapels and the chain closure.  It’s a subtle change (I thought it was a black-on-black tux at first) but it makes for an interesting look.

I love colored tuxes and Usher‘s burgundy (eggplant?  I’m going with burgundy.) Calvin Klein Collection tux looks fabulous with his complexion.

Chris Pine‘s black and white Zegna Couture tux is pretty standard, but the perfect tailoring landed him on my top 5 list.

Last but certainly not least, Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar rocked the white tux jacket, which is always one of my favorite looks.

I wish I could have included every single one of my favorite looks, but I’d be typing for days so I had to trim the list down a bit.  If you want to see more of my favorites, follow my Pinterest board {fashion} red carpet.  I’ll be updating the board throughout the awards season, so keep checking back to see the best of the best.
